95 and 97

This week two ladies of the faith took up residence in Heaven. Ethel and Eunice both lived long happy lives, and both were always cheerful any time I ever saw them. We knew them from our years at Kimball Free Methodist Church. I attended one funeral, but the other was held in Rockwall, further than I was willing to drive.

Celebrate the Milestones

... even if they are just "normal" for most people. We're celebrating the end of Rachel's very first 40-hour work week as a sub. She's getting lots of sub jobs now, but this past week was the first time she has had 5 in a row, full-day jobs. She's trying to save her money for a new computer.

So we went to Panera Bread to have breakfast. Trouble is, we were too slow and they weren't serving breakfast anymore, so we had lunch instead.

Rachel and I went to Family Music Theater's matinée this afternoon. We've had lots of music this weekend because we also went to The Music Man last night in Waxahachie.

3000 miles

American Airlines wish to acknowledge our disappointment in a delayed flight, so will give Gary some free frequent flier miles to make up for it.

What a difference a day makes, as far as the weather, anyway. It suddenly got cold here! We go from A/C to furnace in a day--what's with that??

Better Late Than Never

Gary's plane didn't land until after midnight. It took of late the second time.

"What do you mean, the second time?"

The first time the takeoff was aborted due to a light coming on. They tried again, same light. So back to terminal and the mechanics found a dirty fuel filter.

Yeah, better late than never.

So it was near 2am before we got to sleep, which turned out to be worse for me because Gary said he slept 3 hours on the plane while I was waiting up for him!

Late Plane

I'm off to bed soon. Gary's plane was delayed, so it looks like it will be 1am before he gets here. Lucky me, the other wife agreed to go to DFW and pick them up.

The weather is finally starting to cool down, but still is pretty warm. I went hiking in the woods today and was covered in sweat by the time I got home.

Rachel had a bad migraine last weekend and missed two days of work besides the whole weekend. She's better now, but still feeling a little queasy. I had a flu shot, but that was no big deal. Not much else for news at the moment.

Organ Concert

Tonight Gary and I attended a lovely organ concert at the Park Cities Presbyterian Church in downtown Dallas. And I didn't have to drive.

They are dedicating the new organ (rumored to cost in the $4 million range) this weekend with concerts and singing. The nice program gave details about the instrument, and it appears it has in the neighborhood of 4,000 pipes!

In other news, Rachel's retreat for this weekend was canceled, and she was sad about that. But then Thursday night she got a bad migraine followed by 24 hours of vomiting, so maybe the cancellation was a good thing.

I still other news, Gary is skipping church tomorrow to fly to Boston to attend a workshop at U of New Hampshire. He's traveling with another colleague from the office whose wife will do the DFW runs, so I don't have to drive again. I like this new trend.

Department of Neuroscience

I stole this photo right off of the website of David's new department at Baylor. Baby David is hiding in the back, and it looks like the girls outnumber the guys by a substantial margin. David tells us he is in the running for another scholarship, one that would help him have funds to buy research equipment and attend professional conferences as a student. And to save up for his honeymoon.

We're Baaaaack!

Our internet was flakey on Friday and Saturday and by Sunday had quit working altogether. Just this afternoon (after hours on the phone with customer service and a couple visits by technicians) it is finally working.

Since Gary couldn't do his normal work, he agreed to clean out a laundry basket full of papers which I collected there months ago from his desk, floor, etc. He removed about a ream's worth of paper but there is still a lot there he needs to take care of. I want my laundry basket back!

My Sympathies to Becky

I think it has been nearly 35 years since these two photos were taken. They faded so much in my photo album as to hardly be recognizable that they were taken in color. I was a bridesmaid for my friend Becky when she married Leon. I was sorry to learn that Leon passed away from cancer a couple days ago. He was way too young to die, but he was a believer, so that gives us hope. Lord, comfort Becky and their children during this great time of loss.

David's Bride at David's Bridal

Sarah and David are busy making wedding plans. While Sarah's mom was visiting from Seattle they went shopping for her wedding gown at--where else?--David's Bridal!

Bigger is Better

At the office, when the end of the fiscal year approaches, sometimes we get a nice little surprise. In Gary's case, it was a nice BIG surprise--a 24" flat panel monitor. That is a step up in size from a 21" but several steps down in weight! The wide screen is actually just the ticket for him because when he makes the fonts so large to see them, often the dialogue box would go off the edge of the screen. With the wide screen that doesn't happen. He is grateful for this new monitor and now wants one just like it for home!
